It is that time of the year again. Voting for Goodreads Choice Awards for 2018 has open. There are three stages of voting. In the first stage, and only the first stage, you can nominate books not on the list. It is important to vote this first round if you wish to select a book that Goodreads did not include. I am a bit surprised by some of the books included on the list, and some of them that were not included. So, taking advantage of the write in feature may be useful at this point.

Voting Schedule

October 30 - November 4 Opening Round
November 6 - November 11 Semifinal Round
November 13 - November 26 Final Round
December 4 Winners announced

You can elect books that were published in 2018. The timing of Goodreads Choice Awards have gained some controversy over the years. Voting is over before all the books have even been released for the year. It leaves novels released later in the year at an unfair advantage. While I thought you could include novels released in Nov or Dec of the previous year, there is nothing stating such in the main rules.

Categories

There are a total of 21 categories this year. There is a new 'Best of the Best' category to highlight the ten years of Goodreads Choice Awards. Any book that has won previously is eligible to be voted on for this category. It will be interesting to see how they narrow it down in the upcoming rounds.

The rounds are pretty inclusive with some broad ranging categories, such as Nonfiction, and more specific categories, such as Science and Technology. There are two categories for YA - one for fiction and one specifically for fantasy. It is also interesting that fantasy and science fiction are separate categories, even though fantasy is technically a sub-genre of science fiction. Although, maybe at this point they really have become separated.

There seems to be no way to have read every book on this list. You can choose to just vote for categories that interest you, or you can vote for the best of what you have read. Technically you can also vote for any books that you have not read.

Voting

As important as books are, and as fun as voting on them can be, I would also like to remind you to vote for your own elections. If you are in the US then your midterm elections will be soon, and if it is anything like the California ballot there will be lots of choices before you. Thankfully California allows mail in ballets and I am proud to say that I have voted.

Now to vote on the Goodreads Choice Awards. I have made my final selection in six of the categories. I am still undecided for some. For fantasy I am so close to reading all the selections that I plan on bing reading a few more books before I vote. I also plan on reading as many of the picture books as possible before voting also.
