Did you know that today is World Book and Copyright Day? It is also known as just Word Book Day. The day was first celebrated in 1995 as a way to recognize and honor many of the great authors. April 23rd was chosen because it is the death date of William Shakespeare, Cervantes, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. It is also the date of birth of Maurice Druon, Haldor K Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla, and Manuel Mejia Vallejo. (See Source)
The capital for World Book Day this year is in Athens, Greece due to the cities support of the book industry. Apparently, each year a new capital is chosen. They are looking for applications for 2020 now.
If you are looking for some ways to celebrate today then check out the webpage for World Book Day. (I love that it has its own webpage.) There are lots of resources for teachers and librarians. The book is mostly geared towards younger readers, but if you enjoy YA Fiction then you will find sections to enjoy - including 50 books that will change your life. I see another reading list in my future.
No matter how you chose to celebrate World Book Day I hope it is an amazing one. Happy Reading!!
