I found the book addiction tag at Always Trust in Books and thought that it would be fun to share exactly how addicted to books I am. This is a really great collection of questions. If you join in please leave your link in the comments.
The Book Addiction Tag
What is the longest time you can comfortably go without picking up a book?
Even during my last reading slump I read 7 books in a month. It may have been more actually. My point being that I don’t really ever stop reading. I just don’t always read as much. I usually am in the middle of at least three books at one time. Often I am in the middle of more. If I go one day without reading or listening to a book it is rare. I think one time last year I did go a whole week.
How many books do you carry on your person (or your Kindle) at one time?
I typically carry one paper book. Occasionally, I will have more. On my Kindle I have hundreds of books available to read if needed. I also have a Kindle app on my phone and iPad the rare times I do not have my Kindle with me. Although, even if I do not have my purse I usually at least grab my Kindle. I also have at least one audio book on my phone that I am in the middle of.
Do you keep every book you buy/receive or are you happy to pass them on to make space for more?
Most my books are actually Kindle. It wasn’t until recently that I have acquired paper books some more. Moving across the country a few times makes you really limit the bulk of things you own. I would lend or swap my paper books but I do not actively do so. Maybe when I actually run out of space on my bookshelves I would be more concerned about space.
How long would you spend in a bookshop in a standard visit?
I honestly only spend about an hour. My kids do not last much longer than that and book stores are not made to make you want to stay like the used to. When I was younger I would at least four hours every trip. Back then there were chairs and I would look through stacks of books. I also would walk out spending more money then I would ever think of now.
How much time per day do you actually spend reading?
This is hard to know. I usually listen to an audiobook for an hour while working out at lunch and some in the car. If there is time I will read a little while cooking dinner or while eating. Then I usually read a little before bed. Most of my reading during the week is audiobooks. On the weekends I will usually read as a reward for cleaning or other domestic tasks.
Where does the task ‘pick up a book’ appear on your to do list?
This only appears at work. I read to keep current in my field and to learn new skills. I have a few books I am in the middle of for work. Otherwise, Reading is more a reward for completing a task on my to do list.
How many books do you reckon you own (including ebooks)?
I own almost 4,000 books on my Kindle. Paper books is probably closer to 50. My children’s books are mostly paper, but I do not count their books in my total.
Approximately how often do you bring up books in a conversation?
A lot. My children mostly bring it up because they thing I read to much. My lack of interest in YouTube baffles them (although I do watch some). At work I talk with colleagues about books often. There are a few readers in my office. Most my conversations are about work, kids, Taekwondo, or books.
What is the biggest book (page count) that you have finished reading?
I am honestly not sure. Page counts do not seem such a big deal when you read mostly on your Kindle. However, I have read The Count of Monte Cristo a few times. It was a favorite when I was a teen. I have been meaning to pick it up again. The page count is about 1200.
Is there a book you had to get your hands on against all odds I.e. searching bookshops, online digging, etc.
Not really. There are a few books for work that I have been deciding to buy used or not. However, even as out of print as they are Amazon makes it pretty easy to find. If anything I just have too many books....
A book you struggled to finish but refused to DNF?
I refused to DNF. My last post was my list of books I need to suck it up and finish reading. Some were just because I had to return them to the library. Others were because I am not feeling them.
What are your three main book goals for 2018?
My first goal is to read 100 books. I may reach that by the half way point this year. I also want to make more of a dent on my book lists. So far I have not done much this year. I also want to read more authors completely. Then I will have their books all reviewed on my blog.
Have you ever had the privilege of converting someone into a reader (maybe via inspiration or incessant nagging)?
My son. He was a reluctant reader that became as obsessed as me for a while. I kind of regretted it. He red through school, in the middle of the night, and practically any other time. It made me realize what a pain I was when I was younger. I did all the same things. He still loves books and reading but he watches more YouTube now. Dang YouTube. I never have managed to convert my girls, although they do read some.
Describe what books mean to you in five words.
Life. Sanity. Knowledge. Necessary. Peace.
I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it. I think it is obvious that I am addicted. Audiobooks and the lack of a TV does help this as well. I would love to read your answers. Please drop your links in the comments.
