Fall break is over. I had to wake up bright. In a way it was nice to have to get up and get things done. A week off of work is a long time. This morning went well. It will progressively go less well as the week goes on. My youngest daughter did not wake up before ten all last week - yeah the early teenage years.
It was not my most productive reading week. Although, I did finish three books. I read the last book in the Broken Empire Trilogy. I also did a re-read of the first Harry Potter. They have these amazing new covers, and I will progress in the series as I find the next books in the same cover. It is harder to find then I anticipated. Hopefully Costco will have more next month - a girl can dream.
The Broken Empire books are really conflicting for me. I love the writing and the strong characterization. I am not thrilled about all the violence, and I hate the female representation. Yet, I enjoyed all the character growth. I am reading the short story collection right now. I am really enjoying it. I think I am not a Jorg fan. (I am live tweeting the story reviews on Twitter right now.) I like all the side characters much more. I can't wait to see how the Red Queen series is.
Have you ever re-read a book and went, "Wow, how could I forget how good this book is?" That was how I felt with Harry Potter. I know they are good, but I forgot how good. It was a nice festive break. Next is a family viewing of the first Harry Potter movie.
I also read Girls of Paper and Fire. This was a great counter to Jorg. It is full of strong female characters, although it is still in a repressive environment. I really do want to write a book where females are in charge - maybe it would open some eyes. I know a lot of readers look for LGBTQ representation, this book has it. From my perspective it is a nice to have a healthy relationship in a YA book. There is a trigger warning for sexual assault, something I can be sensitive to, however, while there was assault it was not graphic and not at all triggering for me.
